Following a wave of controversy around ChatGPT and its parent company, OpenAI, many users are migrating to Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant. The tipping point came after Anthropic refused to allow the U.S. Department of Defense to use its AI models for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. In response, President Trump directed federal agencies to stop using Anthropic products, and the Pentagon flagged the company as a potential supply-chain risk.
OpenAI later announced its own agreement with the Pentagon, including claimed safeguards, but public debate over privacy and ethics has persisted. As a result, Claude has surged to the top of the U.S. App Store’s free app rankings, overtaking ChatGPT. Anthropic reports daily sign-ups are at record highs, free user numbers are up more than 60% since January, and paid subscriptions have more than doubled this year.
