OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 With Smarter, More Customizable ChatGPT Experience

OpenAI has introduced GPT-5.1, an updated and more advanced version of the AI model that powers ChatGPT. The release includes two variants: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking.

According to the company, Instant offers a friendlier, more intuitive experience and follows instructions more closely. Thinking, on the other hand, provides clearer reasoning, performs quicker on straightforward prompts, and shows greater persistence on complex ones.

The update also focuses on improving the overall conversation experience. Users can now more easily adjust ChatGPT’s tone, with new preset styles such as Professional, Candid, and Quirky. These additions complement the existing Default, Nerdy, Cynical, Friendly (formerly Listener), and Efficient (formerly Robot) options. The assistant can even suggest tone or style updates mid-conversation when prompted, and users can fine-tune details like warmth, brevity, readability, and emoji frequency.

By default, GPT-5.1 Instant is more playful and expressive, while also staying true to user-defined parameters. GPT-5.1 Thinking adjusts its reasoning time based on question complexity, producing clearer and more empathetic responses with fewer vague terms.

Queries will continue to be directed to the most appropriate model through GPT-5.1 Auto. The rollout begins with paid Pro, Plus, Go, and Business accounts, followed by free and logged-out users. Enterprise and educational customers will have a seven-day early-access option before GPT-5.1 becomes the standard model.

OpenAI intends to release GPT-5.1 gradually to maintain performance stability, so availability may vary by user. The previous GPT-5 model will remain accessible in the legacy dropdown menu for paid subscribers for roughly three months.
