WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature that allows users to translate messages directly within the app. The update, available on both iPhone and Android, is being released gradually and works across one-on-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates.
To use the tool, users can press and hold on a message, then tap “Translate” to select the source and target language. At launch, Android users will be able to translate between English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, while iPhone users will have access to more than 19 languages from the start.
A notable option on Android is the ability to turn on automatic translation for entire conversations, ensuring that all incoming messages in a thread are instantly converted into the preferred language.
While this isn’t the same as real-time spoken or visual translation, it adds a layer of convenience for WhatsApp’s global audience. Similar features have appeared in other apps before, but integration within WhatsApp could make cross-language communication much smoother for its billions of users. The company says it intends to broaden language support over time.
