After years of speculation, Microsoft has finally entered the handheld gaming market with the announcement of the ROG Xbox Ally. This portable console, developed in collaboration with Asus, promises to bring the expansive Game Pass library to gamers on the move. The launch is set for late 2025, although pricing details remain undisclosed.
A Decade of Anticipation
Rumors about a handheld Xbox have circulated for more than a decade. Microsoft reportedly explored various concepts over the years but never brought a product to market—until now. The ROG Xbox Ally arrives just days after Nintendo introduced the highly anticipated Switch 2, a hybrid console that builds on the legacy of its predecessor.
Like the Switch 2 and Valve’s Steam Deck, the Xbox Ally aims to provide portable gaming experiences, but its integration with Game Pass may give it a competitive edge. With over 34 million subscribers, Game Pass offers instant access to a vast library of titles, an advantage rival devices lack.
Two Models to Choose From
Microsoft’s handheld will be available in two configurations: the ROG Xbox Ally and the more advanced ROG Xbox Ally X. Both models feature a 7-inch 1080p display, but they differ in hardware capabilities.
- Standard Model: 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage
- X Model: 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage, plus a more powerful processor and an extended battery life
“Your favorite games should be accessible no matter where you are,” said Roanne Sones, Xbox’s head of gaming devices. Both versions allow users to play games directly, stream via the cloud, or remotely connect to their Xbox console.
One of the Ally’s unique features is its Windows-based operating system, enabling gamers to access third-party platforms like Steam and EA Play alongside Game Pass titles.
Performance vs. Portability
However, the device’s versatility comes with a trade-off: its weight. The standard and X models weigh 670g and 715g, respectively, making them significantly heavier than the Switch 2, which comes in at 534g. This might challenge gamers accustomed to lighter handhelds.
The price of the ROG Xbox Ally remains a mystery. Comparatively, the Switch 2 retails at £395, and the Steam Deck ranges from £349 to £569 depending on its configuration. Microsoft’s pricing strategy will likely play a critical role in the console’s reception.
Game Announcements Steal the Show
Alongside the hardware reveal, Microsoft showcased several new titles for its Game Pass service. These include fan favorites like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, Ninja Gaiden 4, and Outer Worlds 2, all available on launch day for subscribers.
Additionally, the company confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 would debut on Game Pass. However, it notably omitted any mention of the Switch 2, despite Nintendo’s agreement with Microsoft to bring the franchise to its platforms.
Perhaps the most exciting announcement for many fans was the remake of Persona 4, subtitled “Revival.” Originally released in 2008 for the PlayStation 2, this reimagined classic promises to bring its beloved murder-mystery storyline to a new generation. Unfortunately, no release date has been provided.
