FairPrice Group, Singapore’s leading supermarket chain, is partnering with Google Cloud to integrate cutting-edge cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions into its operations. This collaboration is part of FairPrice’s “Store of Tomorrow” initiative, designed to improve both customer experience and operational efficiency.
The initiative will introduce several advanced features at a new FairPrice Finest outlet in Punggol Digital District, slated to open in Q3 2025. These include cloud-connected shopping carts, an AI-powered store operations portal, and video analytics capabilities, all developed using Google Cloud’s infrastructure, data management tools, and generative AI (GenAI) technologies.
FairPrice’s CEO, Vipul Chawla, highlighted the importance of innovation in adapting to evolving consumer preferences. “The rapid changes in consumer needs emphasize the necessity of reimagining retail experiences,” he said, noting the role of advanced AI and data analytics in enhancing customer engagement both in-store and online.
Piloting New Retail Technologies
FairPrice is already testing cloud-connected shopping carts at its Sengkang Grand Mall outlet. These carts guide customers through the store, suggest nearby promotions, and offer tailored product recommendations. With integrated scanners, shoppers can also complete transactions directly on the carts. The technology relies on hardware and software from Trollee, combined with Google Cloud’s BigQuery, Cloud SQL, and Cloud Run services. Additionally, Google Cloud’s Gemini API on Vertex AI powers real-time product suggestions.
To further enhance convenience, FairPrice plans to introduce biometric payment systems supported by Google Cloud’s infrastructure. Integration with the FairPrice consumer app and MyInfo will enable automatic application of discounts for customers in government support programs, eliminating the need for physical cards.
AI-Driven Operational Enhancements
FairPrice has also developed “Grocer Genie,” an AI-driven store operations portal created in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services and low-code platform FlutterFlow. Leveraging Vertex AI, BigQuery, and Gemini models, the portal assigns tasks intelligently and provides actionable insights. For instance, if a manager uploads a photo of a spillage, Grocer Genie can assign a team member to handle the clean-up.
In addition, FairPrice is deploying a video analytics application that integrates Vision AI and Gemini models with its existing CCTV systems. This system provides real-time alerts for situations like low stock, crowded checkout lines, or safety hazards, enabling staff to address these issues promptly.
Strengthening Retail Connections
Karan Bajwa, Google Cloud’s Asia-Pacific president, commended FairPrice’s efforts, emphasizing how enterprise AI fosters stronger relationships between retailers and consumers while optimizing operations. He expressed enthusiasm for continuing to work with FairPrice to deliver meaningful innovations for Singapore residents.
This partnership exemplifies how AI and cloud technologies are reshaping retail, creating more personalized and efficient experiences for shoppers.
